Fourth Presbyterian Church of Boston (www.fourthboston.org) is seeking a part-time Music
Director.

Fourth Church seeks a Music Director to lead its music ministry for a one-year period with flexibility
to extend the employment. Music has long been a central and vital part of ministry at Fourth in a
wide variety of styles and settings. We have a number of talented musicians in our midst and seek a
Music Director who can both lead and collaborate with others. The Music Director is responsible
for planning and preparing for the musical needs of our worship life. Throughout all rehearsals and
services, the Music Director should help foster an atmosphere conducive to musical and spiritual
growth.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Choral Directing and Piano experience
  • Comfort with (or willingness to learn) music in a variety of styles such as sacred, Gospel, and folk.
  • Familiarity with Christian worship. Our worship service is multi-cultural, casual, and open-minded, with Reformed liturgical elements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Congregational Hymns
    Assist our accompanist in leading hymns as needed
    Be a conversation partner with Pastor in selecting hymns
  2. Service Playing (Piano, Organ, or Guitar)
    Responsible for organizing preludes and postludes, which can be choir anthems, soloists, or instrumental pieces
    Arrange for additional instrumental music on communion Sundays (monthly)
    Accompany choral anthems and special music (or make arrangements for accompaniment)
    Work with Pastor to arrange music and find substitute musicians when away on vacation or other planned absences
  3. Adult Choir
    Weekly choir rehearsals (currently on Wednesday evenings)
    Weekly choral anthems during Sunday worship
    Prepare music programs for Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter
    Coordinate music with Pastor on worship themes
  4. Administrative Tasks
    Attend monthly meetings with Pastor and/or Worship Committee (hybrid possible)
    Prepare supplemental materials for the Annual report for the music ministry Advise Pastor when maintenance (i.e. tuning) of organ/pianos is needed
    Provide Pastor with music selection material for the Sunday bulletin
  5. Potential Additional Hours
    Pastor may propose optional hours of music programming outside of regular duties for
    additional pay, depending upon interest and availability. Could include choir concerts,
    theatrical performances, off-site worship services, Summer Wednesday night worship,
    weddings and funerals.

HOURS:
10-15 hours per week (required hours: Sunday mornings and choir rehearsals, flexible otherwise)

COMPENSATION:
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $350.00 per week with opportunities for additional tasks
Expected hours: 10 – 15 per week
Work Location: In person
Vacation/Sick Leave: The position includes two paid Sundays off (with at least two weeks’
notice) and a week of paid sick leave.
